A cosmetic mishap!
WHO: Lavender and Mandy
WHAT: A cosmetic mishap!
WHEN: Early morning, halfway through breakfast
WHERE: Sixth floor girls' bathroom
WHY: Lav needs some action
STATUS: As complete as it'll get

In Lavender's mind, magic and cosmetics simply do not mix. Of course, she'd grown up with the weekly ritual of sleepovers with her Muggle friends, which always involved nicking their mother's lipstick and making themselves up. Harmless enough, all because lipstick does not include the same power that had caused Lavender's wand to randomly shoot pink sparks when she'd first purchased it.

Lavender had always strictly refused usage of Parvati's magical creams and lotions. The Tragic Tale of Eloise Midgen was warning enough for her, not to mention her wariness of magic altogether. Lavender wouldn't use even a Muggle product without first examining the ingredients for dodgy chemicals, and then the label for animal testing. Magical products seldom contained this information, and Lavender did not want the risk of showing up for class with some horrible facial disfigurement.

Even with those reasons behind her, Lavender's senselessness had once again caught up with her. The previous night had found her in the very same spot, examining her reflection scrupulously. She'd done the same thing three years ago, after word of Seamus and Dean's admiration of Parvati's looks had traveled back to her. True, she'd noticed then too the largeness of her eyes, but she never would have expected someone to actually comment on it. She was well aware that Millicent wasn't the nicest of girls, but Lavender was always the unsuspecting.

And so, that morning Lavender had borrowed Parvati's bottle of Manjusha's Magical Minerals and proceeded to dab its contents all over her face. The label simply called it, "An elixir of beauty," and Lavender would have Divination class with Millicent later that day. After waiting the instructed five minutes, Lavender splashed her face with water. And looked in the mirror. And shrieked. Loudly. She should have known that wizards would logically not know the least thing about minerals, but who would've guessed that their concoction would turn her eyebrows blue?

SUMMARY: Lav dyes her eyebrows blue, Mandy's confused, and Lav is able to make it to the Hospital Wing with the help of a transfigured piece of toilet paper.

Mandy had finished eating before the rest of her friends, and had decided to get an early start on walking to class-- there were a lot of stairs involved in getting to the 7th floor, after all. Upon reaching the sixth floor, she heard a loud shriek coming from the direction of the girls' bathroom.

Loud yells and sudden bangs put Mandy on edge this year-- she had spent her entire summer attempting to forget what had happened at the end of the previous school year. Instinct told her that if there was shrieking to be done, then she should probably be as far away as possible.

However, it was not followed up by any more screams of distress, and Mandy's curiousity grew. Reaching for her wand and moving with caution, she slowly entered the bathroom.

Lavender gave her reflection several more moments of horrified silence before giving a small sort of half-choked moan. Hands gripping the sink's lip fervently, Lavender leaned forward to inspect her newly coloured eyebrows more closely. They were blue, all right. Blue, but better shaped than they had been previously.

That condolence was hardly enough to distract Lavender from their overwhelmingly horrific colour, though. And so, Lavender pushed herself away from the mirror quite violently and proceeded to splash her face with more water. Scrubbing at her eyebrows frantically, Lavender shut her eyes and hoped.

With no luck. Opening her eyes, Lavender saw that they were every bit as blue as they had been. Returning her hands to the sink-bed, Lavender prepared to repeat the process. The sharp click as the bathroom door opened slightly convinced her otherwise, of course. Emitting a sharp yelp, Lavender dashed into one of the stalls opposite the mirrors and locked its door.

Pushing the door open, Mandy saw a rush of colour fly into one of the stalls. She swallowed heavily, trying very hard to be brave. Bravery was never her strong suit.

"Erm... hello?" She kept one hand on the door, so as to facilitate an easy exit, if necessary. If, say, a Death Eater sat silently in one of the stalls waiting for her to come in. Mandy shuddered at the thought.

"Is everyone in here okay?"

Lavender stood quietly in front of the door, one hand still holding its clasped lock. She was nervous, that was for sure, and breathing raggedly but doing her best to not make too much noise.

When the intruder spoke, Lavender (rather uselessly) backed away from the stall door, the heels of her shoes clicking against the bathroom tile obviously. After a moment's contemplation, Lavender steeled herself before calling out, "I- I'm fine." Well, it sounded more like a frantic squeak, but it was the best she could manage in such, well, trying times.

Mandy was relieved to hear the voice of a student, and not that of a troll, vampire, or otherwise awful creature. Curiousity now getting the best of her, she let go of the door and stepped into the bathroom. Walking up to the closed stall, she asked, "Are you really? It doesn't sound like it. Do you need toilet paper?" Mandy had learned that it was generally best to start with the most obvious assumption and work your way down.

Lavender flinched as the door clicked shut, wearily leaning against one of the stall's sides. Raising one hand, she gingerly felt one eyebrow, which was still wet and mussed. Frowning, Lavender looked at her damp finger. Its pad was now tinged the same blue as her eyebrows.

Glancing away from her finger and through the crack near the stall door, Lavender bit her lip at the question. How could she explain what had happened? It would be terribly embarrassing, no matter how she went about it. Avoiding the issue, Lavender shook her head before vocally calling back, "No, thank you though." Taking a deep breath, she continued, "I'm really quite all right."

Mandy was stumped. It didn't really even occur to her to feel bad for the poor girl who was obviously in distress-- she simply wanted to know what it was that had happened to her. She was already running through possible scenarios in her mind. "Did you see a mouse?" She asked. "I heard you yell, I know that something must have happened."

Lavender shook her head torridly at the girl's next words, never mind that she couldn't actually see her. "No, no, nothing's happened," she said, one hand now clutching the edge of the toilet's water tower as if to stay upright.

It was a pitiful explanation, true, but it was all Lavender could think of without images of her blue eyebrows dancing through her mind. Closing her eyes, Lavender slid down the length of the wall. She didn't actually sit on the bathroom floor, of course. Rather, she squatted, knees together, and with her elbow perched on the water tower and supporting herself.

Water tower? Is that what those things are called? :/

Mandy was getting frustrated. She was pretty sure that this girl wasn't actually using the toilet, so she figured she would take matters into her own hands: lowering herself to the floor, she stuck her head under the stall door. Upon sight of the terrified Gryffindor, she smiled broadly, her head upside down. "Hi! I'm Mandy Brocklehurst, I'm in Ravenclaw, and you seem to have blue eyebrows!"

Her ladylike squat was completely revamped, of course, when Mandy peered under the door. Slipping the rest of the way down the wall, Lavender's heels scratched their way across the bathroom tiles as she slid into a sitting position.

Becoming face-to-face in her condition with a girl she had many of her classes with did not do to well for Lavender's state of forced calm. Gulping, Lavender looked positively distressed. She gave a nervous laugh, raising one hand to feebly cover her lower forehead.

Mandy continued to stare with a smile, despite the fact that the girl did not respond. "You're in Gryffindor, right? Lucy, is it?" Despite the fact that Mandy had shared classes with the girl, she was rather oblivious to the names and personalities of those not in her own house. "Did you dye your eyebrows blue to match Megan's cat?"

Lavender nodded shakily at Mandy's first clarification, but shook her head at the second. "No, Lavender." In truth, this misnomer distracted her from her immediate predicament, and she even allowed her hand to falter to below her chin. She would have thought that everyone would have heard of her after how Ron had treated her so positively awfully.

At the news of a blue cat, Lavender became even more confused. "I did not," she protested indignantly, clasping her manicured fingers once again over her eyebrows. "Why would anyone want to have blue eyebrows? They look dreadful."

Mandy giggled. "I think blue is a nice colour. PLUS now people can find you if you're lost!" She craned her neck, beginning to feel a little uncomfortable in the her upside-down position. "Er, why don't you open the door? This seems like a silly way to have a conversation."

Sighing pointedly, Lavender rolled her eyes at this rather ridiculous girl. Really, how could anyone even begin to think strangely coloured eyebrows could be a good thing? Flipping her hair ineffectively over her lower forehead, Lavender shook her head vehemently. "Honestly, I'd really rather not have people actually look for my eyebrows," Lavender said, wrinkling her nose. "They're awful, and I want them back to the way they were before."

Pouting wasn't solving her conundrum, and neither was this girl. Still, though, she couldn't think of a way to get rid of her, and she did need a way to fix her eyebrows. Even Lavender was willing to admit that any charm to do so was completely beyond her. And, so, standing with her heels wedged in between the bathroom tile's cracks, Lavender unlocked the door. But didn't step out of course. Anyone could just walk into the bathroom!

Mandy was puzzled. She wanted to help the poor girl who was so obviously distraught, but at the same time, she would need to be on her way soon in order to arrive in class on time.

"Well, I suppose you should change them back, then." she said simply. "To be honest, I'm not really sure why you charmed your eyebrows blue if you didn't like the colour."

Lavender pushed the stall's door open with one arm, ushering Mandy in with the other's hand. Stealing a glance at the otherwise empty lavatory, Lavender gave the other girl an impatient look.

Pursing her lips empathetically, Lavender ran her fingers through her hair out of exasperation. Normally, of course, Lavender would never consider doing such a thing- not if it would mess up the perfect style four dollops of hair cream had created. Really, though, this girl was a Ravenclaw, wasn't she? Lavender was ever-ruled by stereotypes, and this particular one just wasn't working out.

"I can't," Lavender all but whined, hurriedly moving her hair back into place. "I've got absolutely no idea how to even go about doing that." At the last part of Mandy's words, Lavender looked nearly scandalised. "What sort of person would willingly dye their own eyebrows blue?" she spluttered.

Mandy shot a wary eye at the stall door that was now closed behind her. At Lavender's question, she had to giggle. "Well, YOU, apparently." Before the girl could protest, Mandy continued. "But no matter - perhaps you should go to Madame Pomfrey. I don't know how to change your eyebrows back, but..." the girl scrunched up her face, deeply in thought. "Oh! I know. We learned how to do this at the end of last year in Transfiguration." Reaching over to the roll of toilet paper beside them, Mandy unrolled a bit with her left hand, grabbing her wand with her right. Concentrating hard and muttering a quick spell, the paper transformed into a delicate white fan - the fabric quite reminicent of its former self.

"Here!" Mandy held it to Lavender. "To hide your eyebrows on the way there!"

"I didn't do this on purpose!" Lavender shot back, sounding almost hurt. "It was that horrible face wash," she said, giving the bottle a scowl just before the stall's door swung shut. "And I can't go to Madame Pomfrey's- not looking like this. Everyone will be leaving the Great Hall soon."

Even as Lavender spoke, Mandy reached for the toilet paper and did something absolutely inimitable in Lavender's case. Taking the fan wordlessly, she examined it with respect. "Thank you," she said after a moment before giving Mandy a wide smile.
