WHO:
Stephen and YOU?
WHAT: Studying in the Library
WHEN: After Dinner
WHERE: In the back of the Library
WHY: I think the real question is 'Why Not?'

Herbology was the worst for Stephen. He stretched out his legs underneath the table, leaning his chair back on two legs. He'd been the library for nearly an hour and had only written nine inches on the wonders of Gillyweed. He of course had some idea before he'd started about Gillyweed, thanks to Potter's ingenious use of it during the second task of the tri-wizard tournament. There really wasn't much more to it than that, well except maybe the history of it. Lacing his fingers behind his head, he murmured to himself. "Gillyweed, willyweed, Millie Peed."

Setting his chair back down, loudly, he heard a disapproving TSK! coming from the direction of Pince's desk. "Sorry." He muttered, only half apologetically. He slumped onto the table groaning. It felt good, the cool hard wood against his face. He took a breath in and held it for as long as he could before letting it out as slowly as possible. Rubbing his eyes, he sat up straight, only to notice someone now sitting across from him.

Hermione, having stayed up particularly late the evening before - thanks to a group of fifth year Hufflepuffs who thought it a wonderful idea to go gallavanting down the corridors starkers - hadn't yet finished her own essay on Gillyweed, but she really wasn't worried. Herbology was one of her better subjects. Catching one of the only really vacant tables, she wandered over after gathering a good stack of books and set them down carefully. Madam Pince giving her a look of death as she did so - but as if Hermione would ever harm a book?

She noticed a boy sitting across from her with his face pressed against the table, odd, but she didn't see whom it was because his hair was hanging in his face. Sitting down she propped open one of the books and started reading...

"Native to the Mediterranean, this water plant looks like a bundle of slimy, greyish-green rat tails. When eaten, gives a person gills to breathe underwater and gives them webbed hands and feet..."

Hermione stopped when she noticed the boy had lifted his head and once she recognised him her brow furrowed. Lips pursed she cleared her throat and looked back down at her book. "Cornfoot," she said quietly in stiff greeting.

A rather large grin broke across Stephen's face at Hermione's greeting. Poor girl. He and Terry had certainly gotten her all stirred up the night before. "Evening, 'mione."

Not having watched where he laid his head, there was a largish ink smear across his forehead. He glanced at the Gryffindor's book. Ah, Herbology. Glad he wasn't the only one who had waited until the last night finish his essay, he checked his parchment - a not very neat, mostly smugged parchment now. He began shuffling through his other things on the table trying to see what the ink had rubbed on.

"Bloody Brilliant." He said exasperated. At least the ink hadn't ruined anything else. But still he had to rewrite at least half a foot of research.

At least he was being civil this time round. She finished the sentence she was writing and glanced at his smudged, rather messy looking parchment. If that wasn't one of Hermione's pet peeves. "Herbology then hm?" she asked, raising her eyebrows and stifling a bit of a laugh as she noted the ink blotch on his forehead.

Regaining a bit of composure she pulled her hair back into a pony and nodded toward his face, "You've got a bit of an ink smear. Just there." Her hands tightened her pony and a finger moved to poke at his forehead. Then, looking at his progess, she realised he probably needed the books she'd gathered more than she did.

A bit of a sigh escaped her lips and she scooted her chair over so she was sitting across from him. "Here," leaning over the table she handed him the book she was reading, "Just read the first couple of pages. It'll be more than enough to finish that off."

Stephen tentatively touched his forehead and then examined his fingertips. This is why he didn't get girls. He did idiotic things in front of them, and then had no clue how to fix them. Licking his palm and then rubbing his forehead, Stephen smiled weakly, first at her mention of his inky forehead, and then at her offering her book.

Still unaware of what his forehead looked like, he looked around at the tables near them. Everyone seemed to be engrossed in what ever they were doing, and not at all interested in what was going on at his table. Not really wanting to interrupt Hermione after her help, but he couldn't help it. He whispered rather loudly to her. "Is it gone?"

Shaking her head, a smile twitching at the corners of her lips, Hermione turned back to her book as he started to rub at the mark. Boys were so ridiculous, but then again perhaps that was why she liked them so much. After all, they did manage to offset her serious, stuffy self didn't they? And that was certainly a good thing. One couldn't be a tightwad all the time.

Lifting her eyes from her book she leaned forward on her elbows and couldn't help as the corner of her mouth pulled in a half smile. "Yes Stephen. Its gone," she replied with a small chuckle. Maybe he wasn't so bad. I mean, he wasn't being rude now. Perhaps she shouldn't have acted so extreme - after all - they said they were just teasing. And boys have absolutely no concept of what 'taking it too far' means. The smile disappeared and she sighed. "Sorry about - well - acting so extreme last night," she whispered quietly, glancing up from the text to look at him.

He let out a sigh of relief. Stephen hated to leave the library mid-project, and if he did leave, he'd never find another table. Pulling out a fresh piece of parchment, he began the arduous task of copying and decoding his first try at the essay.

At first, he thought she might be speaking purely sarcastically, but after studying her, he decided she was apologetic. "No need for that. Terry and I... well we really might have taken it a bit to far. We're idiots like that." Terry probably wouldn't like being called an idiot, but how Terry felt about him at the moment wasn't his concern. Hermione was a girl, and she talked to girls, and Stephen wanted a girl - well, girlfriend. He figured it was best to stay on the female population's good side.

Hermione laughed and nodded, "Well. No harm done." Maybe this was why boys always had such a problem with girls. They were so completely oblivious. Especially Ron. The Yule Ball was a prime example. If they only just took a few seconds to think before they spoke! Or wrote in this case. Oh well. No matter. "And I made sure to retract the detentions," she added quickly. Detention was a bit harsh. Especially for just joking around.

"So - very far on that?" she asked, glancing over at his paper. Her parchment was nearly full already and she only had a few more inches to go before she was finished. It was quite easy work considering the level they were at.

Stephen scribbled away at his essay. stopping shortly to look over what he'd written on the ink smeared parchment. squinting a bit to make out what he'd written before. The ink wasn't the only thing making it so hard to read. Stephen's atrocious handwriting was more the problem.

"Yeah, thanks for that. I really wasn't looking forward to detention." Stephen smiled at her. He noticed how neat Hermione's handwriting was and felt a bit embarrassed and when she glanced at his parchment he felt his cheeks redden. "Just about finished, although you'd never know looking at it."
