who Eli and....you.

why He's bored

Eli closed up his journal and filed it away in the nightstand next to him. He slid the drawer shut and slid off the bed to put his shoes on and slip a sweater on over his head. The black sweater read Thestrals on it, with the crest on it, and a few designs here and there. Eli jammed his hands into his pocket and started off to the stairs. He needed to get out, he'd finished his homework, and staying inside was giving him a headache. He'd changed into his regular clothes, consisting of his sweater, blue (rather baggy) jeans, and his muggle shoes. He was fond of muggle shoes, especially the ones that were called skater shoes. He wasn't sure what it meant, but they were bloody comfortable. Pulling his hood over his head he walked out of the common room, and down the halls to the doors leading out back. His feet padded down the dark halls, all you could hear was him breathing, and his footsteps. Everything else was silent. Everyone was probably studying, doing homework, or...sleeping. Those were the three things most kids did after classes. But, unlike them, Eli was out for a walk. He had a headache, and it was driving him mad, fresh air seemed to be the only cure. First, he had to send a letter he'd written to his muggle friend. He missed her.

Stepping up the stairs to the Owlery, he looked around for his newest owl, Pepper. When he saw the owl come out of a owl house, he grinned and called him over. The owl came over happily and watched as Eli strapped the letter onto his leg. "You know where Em lives. Just take it there." he said quietly and smiled as the owl took off out the window and into the distance. He wanted to owl her so bad, but he knew it was hard to, with her living in a muggle neighborhood. But his owl was usually good about being sneaky, and not being noticed. Eli sighed and pulled at his hood, making sure it wouldn't fall off and rounded the corner to see someone else coming up the stairs. He jumped back as they almost collided and laughed nervously. "Sorry about that." he said softly and started around them.

Lavender had never been particularly fond of owls. They were dirty, smelly, and (when met with her, at least) had a tendency to bite. Her parents, however, did not have magical journals, and Lavender's desire for more pocket money was rapidly beginning to sway her opinion on the creatures. And so, Lavender had written up a very long letter to her parents the night before, making sure to mention how much she missed them before pleading for gold to use on the next Hogsmeade trip.

After classes the following day, Lavender glumly retrieved the letter from her nightstand after changing into her typical attire of a Muggle skirt and blouse. Those clothes were hardly efficient when it came to the brisk weather that Lavender was greeted with upon reaching the Owlery Tower, however. Folding her arms over her chest, Lavender looked up the stairs as she rubbed her bare arms for warmth. Sighing, she let the door swing shut behind her and hurridely began to climb, the heels of her shoes clicking sharply with each step. Lavender began taking the steps two at a time (a risky feat in her shoes), hoping to get to the slightly better temperatures sooner. That plan of action, however, did not bode well with the prospect of another person on the stairs, as Lavender soon leared. Rearing back upon seeing Elijah, Lavender gripped the railing for support as she emitted a startled yelp. Smiling shakily when she'd regained her balance, Lavender moved aside, shivering.

Eli looked at the girl and noticed that it was Lavender. He couldn't tell at first, he wasn't good with matching names with faces, but he succeeded this time. "Sorry." he apologised again. Eli was clumsy, but he never really bumped into someone. Maybe once, but this was the second time and it was a shocker. He looked at her and then back at the ground. Awkward? Yes. He didn't know what to say. Eli wasn't good with talking to girls, or anyone for that matter. Just Hannah, or maybe he could if he was at a party and he was excited or hyper and didn't care, but right now he had a headache and he wanted Em to owl him back soon.

As his mind raced, he stared at the ground and finally spoke. "So - who're you owling?" he asked. Great, now you're being nosy! He thought. Nosy nosy nosy. Wonderful. "Erm, you don't have to say." he covered up quickly and then blushed. He sounded like a dolt. Eli felt himself blush, and he laughed nervously, hoping she wouldn't make fun of him or get scared. "I - I'm sorry." he apologised and looked down at the ground again. "I'll - I'll just go." he ended with a sigh and started to go around the girl to head down the steps. He figured if he just left, she wouldn't remember and he could go down by the lake, get some fresh air, and hopefully his headache would go away.

Lavender shrugged off his apology, waving it away with the hand that held her letter. Still gripping the staircase's railing, Lavender swallowed hard before saying, "It's fine, I should have been watching where I was going." He was nervous, obviously, but Lavender didn't really know him well enough to gather a reason. Besides, it really was awfully cold outside and the enclosed racks of owls was too few steps away for her to dwell on it.

Rubbing her lips together fervently, Lavender was suddenly very thankful for the moisturizing lip gloss she'd purchased before the end of the summer holidays. At Eli's question, Lavender frowned before listening to his rambling with rapt attention. Or, rather, staring at his sweater, which looked very, very warm, especially compared to Lavender's blouse. "Hm?" she asked, realizing he'd finished speaking. She didn't have the faintest idea what he'd just said, only the basic gist of his original question. "Oh- just my parents."

Eli watched her shrug off his apology and reply. She didn't seem a bit mad that he'd almost bumped into her, and knock her to the gorund. All he could really do at the moment was nod. What did you say to that? If he agreed it'd be rude, and if he disagreed...well it'd be false. Because, she should have watched where she was going, and he should have also. "I should've too." he finally spit out.

When he saw her shiver a bit, he felt even more embarrassed. She wasn't wearing anything warm, just a skirt and blouse. "Oh, sorry." he apologised and moved out of the way for her to go in. Her parents. The usual, owling parents before break, asking if they should come home, or stay at school. Eli had already done that, and he was just owling Em. They'd dated the summer before, and he missed her. He'd told her he'd owl, and she agreed. Em knew how to owl him, he'd taught her over the summer so that they could write. After all, he didn't know how to use a mail man, and they surely didn't have one at Hogwarts. "Ah - seems like everyone is." he said with a nod.

Lavender smiled gratefully at Eli, stepping past him to reach the Owlery. Giving the racks of owls behind her a nervous glance, Lavender fiddled with the tied parchment in her hands. She usually avoiding this type of mail altogether, only using it when she really needed to. She has hardly good with that sort of animal- they don't even have fur! Lavender was much more comfortable with, say, a cat.

Nodding slowly in return to Eli, Lavender leaned against one of the stone pillars. She quickly corrected herself, however, once again standing straight. It was probably filthy! Wiping one hand over the offending bit of arm, Lavender replied, "We haven't had a Hogsmeade trip yet, and this sort of weather reminds people of how soon the hols are."

Eli watched her hesitating with picking an owl and grinned. "I'm guessing you hate owls?" he asked walking over and looking at all the different birds. He'd used two school owls when he was in his first, second, and third year, but during his fourth his parents bought him a regular owl. "Which one is yours?" Eli asked curiously, trying to guess which one might belong to Lavender, but he wasn't sure.

As he watched her lean against a pillar, he wrinkled up his nose and watched her pull away quickly. Eli couldn't help but laugh at her action and shook some hair out of his eyes. "I know, I'm running out of Droobles and I'd like a refill soon." he said with a small smile and pulled at his hood as it slid off slowly. The dark hood made his features shadowed, and slightly dark, but his eyes stood out like a sore thumb. The bright blue stood out against the dark sweater as they shot around, looking at different things.

Biting her lip to stifle a giggle, Lavender nodded. "Is it really that obvious?" she asked, scuffing the ground with the bottom of her shoe. "I think they're horrible, actually," she said honestly, "I haven't got one of my own- I just use the school's." Glancing behind herself once again, Lavender eyed the many racks of owls almost suspiciously.

"Droobles?" she asked, wrinkling her own nose in turn. "I'll simply be glad to be out of the castle, really. All of the professors are making such a fuss over NEWTs." Frowning, she crossed her arms over herself once more. She was never one to worry about tests, but the combined stress of those around her was beginning to affect her.

He nodded and sighed. "Well, it might just be me, but seeing a girl walking around, looking at owls with a nervous expression kind of hints she doesn't like them." Eli answered with a small laugh and looked at one of the owls. "He's good. Doesn't bite, claw, or complain, and he's fast." he informed walking over to a black owl with green eyes. It looked up at Eli and hopped onto his shoulder, Eli couldn't help but laugh and pluck him off, setting him back on the perch.

"Not like Droobles?" he asked and continued to walk around the Owlery. "I'm nervous about them, and I agree, with them fussing over it doesn't help." Eli agreed with a nod and jammed his hands into his front pocket of the black hoodie.

"Oh, I don't know," Lavender mused, smoothing her hair back with one hand before returning it to the other to retie her letter's ribbon. "It's not as if I go barmy during the morning post or anything like that." Trailing behind Eli absentmindedly, Lavender said, "It's so horribly filthy here besides." After looking up at the shelves of owls with discontent, she returned her gaze to Eli, and the bird on his person. Raising her eyebrows as he deposited the bird back on the perch, Lavender was sure to keep her distance.

"They're all right, I s'pose," she admitted. "I prefer ordinary gum, is all. The Muggle type," she clarified, still following him idly. "Are NEWTs really so terribly important?" she asked after a moment.

Eli glanced back at Lavender just as she looked at him, and he felt his cheeks flushing. "Yeah, it is." he agreed quietly and laughed when he heard some of the birds 'talking' and pecking at each other. "So - which one are you planning on using?" he asked contently, turning around to face Lavender.

"I agree. Muggle gum is better, it has a better taste to it, and it's different." he rambled and laughed quietly. "But, I ran out." he added. When she asked if NEWTs were important he laughed and nodded. "Yeah, they're probably the biggest and most important test we've got to take." Eli explained with a smirk and made sure his hood was still pulled up over his head.

Not noticing Eli's momentary discomfort, Lavender shrugged. "I dunno, really. You said that one is good?" she asked, gesturing with her letter toward the bird he'd handled. All of the owls seemed equally strange to her, honestly. She'd grown up with Muggle postage, and had never really gotten used to the idea of using birds as a mail service.

Lavender nodded assuredly at Eli's agreement. "I never know when to stop chewing with the magically everlasting type," she admitted, tossing her hair over her shoulder with one hand. Her sunny smile faltered, however, when he revealed the importance of NEWTs. "That what everyone's been saying," she sighed.

Eli nodded slowly and smiled. "She's a good owl." he said quietly and saw her pecking at some food in front of her. He smiled and turned around to face Lavender. "How come you don't like owls?" he asked randomly. Eli wasn't sure why'd he'd asked Lavender this. It was - well an odd question. Not many people get asked that question, and probably for a good reason.

He couldn't help but laugh at her comment. "It's true." Eli agreed with a nod and licked his dry lips. Glancing around at the owls he heaved a tired sigh and shifted his weight over to his other side. "I'm not looking forward to them." he admitted with a nervous smile and looked down at the ground.

“If you say so,” Lavender said, choosing to trust Eli’s judgment. “I just tie the letter around her leg, right?” she asked, tilting her head to one side and clasping the rolled parchment between her hands. She was at least able to recognize that it wasn’t a very good idea to attach her letter while the bird was eating, however. Besides, she might go off and kill some poor mouse if Lavender didn’t let her finish her meal.

Blinking vapidly at Eli, for a moment, Lavender shrugged. “Oh, lots of things, really,” she said, looking back to the owl. “This place, for one. I don’t particularly like coming up here,” she said in all seriousness. “We’ve both agreed that it’s filthy, and it’s also very cold.” Laughing, Lavender wrapped her arms around herself more tightly.

“OWLs were bad enough,” Lavender said, pursing her lips. “Especially the practicals.” She’d always been horrible with spell work, and the very old man who’d evaluated her Charms had recognised that very easily.

Eli laughed when she asked if she just tied the letter to her leg. "Yeah. You want me to?" he asked when he saw her looking at the owl. Lavender obviously hadn't used owls much. Eli on the other hand used them all the time. It was really his only source of communication to other people away from school. His mum always wrote, they'd been writing constantly since his father passed away. Eli hadn't gotten over what happened that long month. It was horrid. The image of his father on the ground flashed in his mind. Eli flinched and pulled his hood.

"They were too hard." he said with a nod. "I passed easy." Eli bragged with a small smile. He had passed with great scores on his OWLs and his mum was very proud of him. Eli studied for the test all year long, and it had payed off very well.

“Oh, would you?” Lavender asked, exuding quite a bit of gratitude for so simple a task. Truth be told, however, she probably wouldn’t have been very well off tying it on her own. Just standing in the Owlery with all sorts of muck and small bones around her shoes was one thing, but actually touching the creature that had produced such grime was quite another. Owls were pretty enough to look at, she supposed, but most definitely only from a distance. Still, though, she hardly thought such birds qualified as pets.

Looking slightly dejected, Lavender shrugged her shoulders. “I did well enough on the written parts. Professor Flitwick wasn’t too keen on me continuing Charms, but he’s always liked me.” Lavender was good at simply remembering the methods of spells, but the carrying out of them she found to be much more difficult. She wasn't hopeless, of course, but incantations definitely weren't her strong suit.

Eli smiled when he was finished and grabbed the owl softly. Setting it on the window sill he let her go softly and she flew off. Some how that bird knew where to go with out you saying a word to her. Watching the owl fly off he turned towards Lavender and realised that she was only wearing a blouse and skirt. She must be freezing. Contemplating on whether or not to give her his sweater he bit his lip and sighed. "Y-you want my sweater?" he asked finally. Starting to pulled it off, he felt the harsh breeze hit his bare skin hard, but he held it out to her. He knew it'd be big, but she was cold and he was always a gentleman.

"Oh yeah. He's always nice." Eli agreed with a nod. Looking out onto the grounds he glanced down at his black, baggy long sleeved shirt. It was thick, and it advertised one of his favourite Quidditch Teams, the Cannons. He loved them and the Thestrals.

Lavender's watched Eli attentively as he prepared the owl for flight, although of course from a 'safe' distance. Smiling at him in thanks when he turned back to her, she suddenly frowned when he sighed and offered his sweater. True, it was very cold, but began to protest anyway. "Oh, it's all right," she said quickly when he handed over to her, putting her own hands open-palmed toward him.

Nodding uncomfortably now, Lavender glanced down at his sweater as well. She'd love to be able to take it from him, but she didn't really know him too well. Oh, he seemed clean enough, that wasn't the problem, but she didn't want to seem too helpless.

He couldn't help but feel his mouth slip into a frown, just barely, but you could hardly tell. "Sorry..." he said quietly and pulled the sweater back. He knew it was too forward, she didn't know him very well, and it made sense. If he were a girl he wouldn't have taken it.

Great - he'd made them both umcomortable. Eli could tell by her face that she'd just gotten extremely uncomfortable. They'd been up at the Owlry for at least ten minutes, maybe more. He couldn't tell. Glancing at his watch he saw that they'd been up there for a half an hour.
