Who: Theodore Nott + Hermione Granger
What: An innocent little 'homework help' session in the library. Apparently.
Where: The library
When: Seven o'clock
Why: Because Theo can't resist acting on the thoughts he entertains.

Theodore may well have been a number of undesirable things but one thing he certainly never was was unpunctual. It had been a good fifteen minutes before his designated seven o'clock meeting time with Hermione when he had arrived in the library. Now, with only mere minutes to go until the clock would strike for the hour, he sat at a table in good view of the door, books and parchment spread out in front of him. He hadn't been entirely untruthful in his owl; a completed History of Magic essay did sit in front of him and he had been concerned with fact-checking ... the day before. But, after spending a good portion of the previous evening in the library studying a few useful books, he was long since satisfied with the essay. Not that Hermione was to know that. He had needed a reason to get her to meet him, after all, and he could think of nothing that would be more compelling to the Gryffindor than a plea for help with schoolwork.

Hermione was a bit confused as to why Theodore Nott wanted to meet with her in library. Homework? Honestly. He was a better student than that wasn't he? Either way it was odd and she really didn't know how to think. Maybe he was making a, rather lame, attempt at House Unity? Oh who was she kidding.

Punctual being Hermione's middle name, she had shown up at the library with three minutes to spare. Her hair pulled back in a pony, and her History of Magic book tucked neatly under her arm, Hermione entered the library in a rather stiff manner. It was nearly seven, and if Theodore knew what was good for him he'd be there a bit early. Her eyes scanned the library tables for his thick mop of dark curls when they finally found him sitting at one near the back. Letting out a sigh she rolled her eyes and continued forward, asking herself over and over again why she'd agreed to this.

Reaching him she set her book down and her hands took their usual place at her hips, a brow quirked upward in question. "Well, let's get this over with shall we? Just in case some of your classmates see us together. Wouldn't want your reputation tarnished would we," she said cooly, pulling out the chair across from him and sitting down.

Though he had every intention of seeming serious until he didn't, Theo couldn't help but give a small laugh at this. Albeit a fairly friendly laugh. He would have been a good actor. "You've known me for six years, love. Do you honestly thing I care who sees us together?" Not only was it true but it was a nice start to his plan, if he did say so himself. He even managed to put on somewhat of a disappointed tone to take it even further. "But if it's too much for you to be seen with a Slytherin I'll try not to keep you." Merlin help him, he genuinely sounded as if he cared.

She actually felt herself becoming a bit sympathetic for the boy. I mean - as much as she hated him for being an utter prat - he seemed like he might actually need help. Another sigh escaped her and she pushed some of her hair out of her face. "No, no, its fine. Here, let's just look at it alright?" she replied, scooting her chair a bit so she could read the parchment.

It was actually quite good. His grammar and punctuation were excellent and every fact and quote he'd used so far were well placed and correct. Her brows furrowed a bit toward the middle of the essay. "This bit here, it needs some re-wording I think. It just sounds a bit awkward if you get me," she said, glancing up from the parchment to look at him. "The sentence just needs a bit of tinkering is all," she said with a small nod, then her eyes went back to the paper.

The sentence wasn't all that was awkward though. I mean, sitting next to Theodore Nott was completely off and rather unnerving, but Hermione was keeping her cool well.

Although he managed to keep a straight face as she read through his essay it took a lot of effort on Theodore's part as Hermione pointed out the part she believed needed rewording. Still he fought the urge, nodding along with her suggestion and even adding in a little comment about how he got so caught up with the facts sometimes that he forgot about the prose of an essay for authenticity. It was after Hermione carried on reading the essay that Theo 'found' himself (read: deliberately started) looking at his classmate instead of the essay. Staring at her, even. He mused for a moment how she really wasn't even particularly unattractive. Of course, he'd noticed that before, soon realising that it was when she opened her mouth when the problems of unattractiveness began to arise.

She nodded at his reply and fought back the urge to shake her head. Boys were so ridiculous. She let out another sigh and propped her head up with her hand, her elbow resting on the table. Finding another awkward sentence she opened her mouth to mention something but found that Theodore was staring at her. Though not in a normal 'I'm listening' sort of way. This was like, well, different.

Hermione looked over both shoulders then back at Theodore. "What is it?" she asked, clearing her throat a bit. He was making her nervous.

Theo looked honestly shocked and ashamed when Hermione finally noticed his staring (which was quite a feat as he made a point of never being embarrassed about anything he did or said). "Oh, Merlin, I'm sorry," he said quickly with an added stutter for effect. "It's just ..." He trailed off, sighing deeply. Bowing his head down for a moment to take a few deep breaths (which served to stop him from laughing as well as furthering his facade) it took him a moment before he looked back up at Hermione, eyes wide. "I've got to be honest, I didn't really ask you to meet me because I needed help with my essay."

Hermione's cheeks flushed a deep red and she leaned back in her chair a bit, attempting to regain composure. Clearing her throat she smoothed out her skirt, her eyes quite interested in the threading. Taking in a breath she let it out slowly and looked back up at Theodore, completely calm. "Oh. Well then what is it?" she asked in as even a tone as she could muster considering the circumstances.

"I didn't really ask you to meet me because I needed help with my essay" Well what in the bloody hell does that mean?! Merlin's beard. This was bad. She was so completely caught off guard and rather embarassed to be honest. But she was Hermione and thus kept her calm well.

"Iwantedtoaskyoutothedance!" Theo gave his answer in about as dramatic a voice as he could muster, his words rushed so much that even he could hardly be sure of what was coming out of his mouth. This 'answer' of his was followed with a nervous laugh that couldn't have been more uncharacteristic. Merlin, he would have blushed if he could have. But, as it were, his act was convincing enough as it was. He forced himself to take a few shaky to deep breaths before raising his eyes from the grain of the wooden tabletop that he had been staring at to meet Hermione's once again. He spoke slowly this time. "I wanted to ask you to the dance." Theo expelled a sigh of apparent relief. "There, I said it."

Her eyes widened on impact of his words and she felt her cheeks flush again, only this time was much worse than before. "You what? I'm sorry, it sounded like you asked me to the ball," she said, her voice considerably higher than it usually was.

Theodore Nott. Asked her. To the ball. What?

Taking in a deep breath she really didn't know what to say. Ron was supposed to ask her. Then again...maybe he didn't want to. That'd always been at the back of Hermione's mind, but she never really wanted to accept it. Maybe Ron didn't want to. Theodore seemed nice enough didn't he? I mean - this whole time - he hadn't said a single mean thing to her. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad?

"Well...I mean...I suppose...are you sure?" she heard herself ask in reply.

Theodore suddenly seemed a whole lot more relaxed now that was out of his system. Of course he was really just looking for an excuse to smile as he really couldn't hold it in much longer. "Yes, I mean, if you've no one else in mind. I heard that maybe you wanted to go with Weas ... umm, Ron and if that's true then I'd understand but ..." Theo trailed off, shaking his head and letting himself smile now that he felt it was safe. "Yes. I'm sure."

She felt rather bad for Theodore. It took quite a lot of courage for boys to ask girls this sort of thing and he'd done rather well considering. The fact that he might be joking hadn't entered Hermione's brain. For even though she was extremely book smart she could probably use a tad more common sense. Then again there was the fact that boys never approached her at all, sans Viktor, and the thought of having someone other than the Bulgarian Seeker find her attractive was flattering. And you didn't think Hermione had an ego.

"Oh - Ron, well, he hasn't actually-" she started, but stopped, "Well. I don't know. I'm really very flattered," she said, smiling genuinely for the first time in their conversation. Giving him a pat on the shoulder she shook her head, "But...well to be honest I wanted to give Ron a bit more time." Her cheeks flushed again and she glanced down at her lap. "It was thoughtful, and brave, of you to ask though," she said with another smile.

It took every ounce of Theo's willpower not to burst out laughing. In fact, he could have, but he wasn't quite that guy. He's wasn't exactly cruel ... he just liked to have a good laugh. And sometimes it just happened to be at the expense of other people.

He looked momentarily disappointed before he brightened up. "I understand. In fact, I really hope he works up the courage to ask you." Theo offered a winning smile though his thoughts were along the lines of perfect bloody couple.

Hermione nearly chuckled at Theodore's response, but nodded, the smile growing a bit. "Thank you. So do I," she replied. He was really quite a nice person if he was by himself. It wasn't every boy that wished you good luck with the 'other guy' when turned down. How nice of him. "Good luck yourself. I'm sure there're plenty of girls who want to go with you," she said nodding and giving his shoulder another pat.

How completely odd. After all this time she thought him a complete dolt. Maybe he wasn't such a bad guy. "Well...uhm...now that we're done with that," she laughed a bit, "Anything else I can do?"

"I think that's about it," he smiled warmly. "I've taken up quite enough of your time." No one could say that Theo wasn't a charmer. His expression remaining friendly, the Slytherin gathered up his books and parchment, standing up before regarding Hermione for one last time. "Once again I'm really sorry for bringing you here under false pretenses. And good look with Ron!" And, with that, Theo headed out of the library, barely able to contain himself as he headed off down to the Slytherin dungeons. Ahh, what an experience.
